Researchers in Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), America says that China has been suffering from poor air quality for a long time now and it has been crippling the country\u2019s major cities. People are struggling every day to breathe clean, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/lifestyle\/health-wellness\/article\/3029918\/how-air-pollution-makes-people-unhappy-and-irrational-and\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>fresh air<\/strong><\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\">In recent time, the WHO (World Health Organization) published their ranking of countries with the worst air quality. Among many countries, China is usually at the top which has aggravated people of the country to post their thoughts on their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aqi.in\/blog\/people-country-choke-pollution-level-rises\/\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">social media platforms<\/span><\/strong><\/a>. The effects of air pollution have made it difficult for people to breathe clean air.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; color: #000000;\">Air Pollution Makes People Unhappy<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\">Nature Human Behaviour recently published a study that says a higher level of pollution is directly affecting people. It is slowly decreasing the level of happiness in people\u2019s life. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aqi.in\/blog\/air-pollution-may-be-linked-to-mental-health-conditions\/\"><strong>Researchers<\/strong><\/a><\/span> say that despite an increase of annual economic growth rate of 8%, the satisfaction level among China\u2019s urban population has not increased as much as it was expected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\">Inadequate public services, increasing house prices, concerns over food and water safety, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aqi.in\/blog\/why-hotels-should-opt-for-air-quality-monitoring-systems\/\"><strong>air pollution<\/strong><\/a><\/span> caused by industrialization, coal burning, and the rise in a number of vehicles have had a significant rise in the poor air quality in China.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\">\u201cPollution also has an emotional cost. People are unhappy, and that means they may make an irrational decision,\u201d says Siqi Zheng who works as an associate professor at MIT.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; color: #000000;\">Dangerous Effects of Air Pollution in China\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2861\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aqi.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Air-Pollution-Makes-People-Unhappy-2-1024x573.jpg\" alt=\"Air Pollution Makes People Unhappy\" width=\"719\" height=\"402\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\">Air pollution can damage health in various ways. A recent news piece states that brain cells are severely damaged from breathing poor <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aqi.in\/blog\/the-modi-government-must-tackle-air-pollution\/\"><strong>ambient air quality<\/strong><\/a><\/span>. Air pollution can also impair cognitive performances, cause emotional distress, and also affect productivity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\">According to Zheng. \u201cWe wanted to explore a broader range of effects of air pollution on people\u2019s daily lives in highly polluted Chinese cities. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aqi.in\/blog\/pollution-is-our-your-biggest-enemy-what-step-are-you-taking\/\"><strong>Social media<\/strong><\/a><\/span> gives a real-time measure of people\u2019s happiness levels and also provides a huge amount of data, across a lot of different cities.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\">To measure daily happiness level among the people in each of the cities in China, a team of researchers from MIT applied a machine learning algorithm that would analyze the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aqi.in\/blog\/how-monitoring-air-quality-data-has-become-an-absolute-necessity\/\"><strong>210 million geotagged<\/strong><\/a><\/span> tweets from China\u2019s largest microblogging platform Sina Weibo.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Machine Learning Algorithm Calculated Happiness Quotient<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\">The tweets cover a period from March to November 2014. For each tweet, the researchers applied the machine-trained sentiment <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aqi.in\/blog\/cigarettes-smoke-air-pollution\/\"><strong>analysis algorithm<\/strong><\/a><\/span> to measure the sentiment of the post. They then calculated the median value for that city and day, the so-called expressed happiness index, ranging from 0 to 100, with 0 indicating a very negative mood, and 100 a very positive one. Finally, the researchers merged this index with the daily PM2.5 concentration and weather data.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\">They found a significantly negative correlation between <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aqi.in\/blog\/3-effective-ways-in-which-artists-turned-air-pollution-into-art\/\"><strong>pollution and happiness levels<\/strong><\/a><\/span>. Women were more sensitive to higher pollution levels than men, as were those on higher incomes.
