Studies reveal that Including the national capital of India, these cities are prime hotspots for the rising levels of nitrogen dioxides.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\">Environmental NGO Greenpeace India recently conducted a survey. The analysis says that due to the rise of population, there is an increase in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aqi.in\/blog\/air-quality-app-is-a-great-way-to-check-air-quality\/\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">air pollution in various metro cities<\/span><\/strong><\/a>. As per their data, with the rise of population, there is a sudden increase in vehicular pollution and diesel consumption in metro cities like Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, and Hyderabad.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; color: #000000;\">Effects of Nitrogen Dioxide in Indian Cities<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\">&#8220;Over the past few years, several studies have <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aqi.in\/blog\/report-7-of-the-10-most-polluted-cities-in-the-world-are-in-india\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">identified PM2.5, NOx and O3 pollutants<\/span><\/a><\/strong> having a significant impact on human health. These are particularly dangerous air pollutants, causing respiratory illnesses and lung damage with acute exposure, and increasing the risk of chronic diseases such as heart attacks and lung cancer with long-term exposure,&#8221; said Pujarini Sen, Senior Campaigner, Greenpeace India.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\">According to the Greenpeace India data, which has been collected between Feb\u20192018 and May 2019 \u2013 Coal consumption and industrial clusters like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aqi.in\/blog\/watch-video-shows-how-particles-pour-out-of-vehicles-and-cause-harm-to-school-going-children\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Sonbhadra-Singrauli in Madhya Pradesh<\/strong><\/span><\/a> and Uttar Pradesh, Korba in Chattisgarh, Chandrapur in Maharashtra, Mundra in Gujarat and Durgapur in West Bengal and Talcher in Odisha are equally polluting as far as NO2 emissions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2517 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aqi.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Coal-consumption-and-industrial-clusters.jpg\" alt=\"Effects of Nitrogen Dioxide in Indian Cities\" width=\"640\" height=\"461\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\">Tropospheric ozone (O3) is a gaseous pollutant that is produced by photochemical oxidation or VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) and CO (Carbon Monoxide) in the presence of NO2. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aqi.in\/blog\/government-launches-national-clean-air-programme-making-it-a-toothless-tiger\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>NGO analyzed satellite data<\/strong><\/span><\/a> to monitor the vertically integrated amount of many atmospheric gases that also included Nitrogen dioxide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\">&#8220;NO2 is a dangerous pollutant in itself and also contributes to the formation of ozone and PM2.5, two of the most dangerous air pollutants. It is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aqi.in\/blog\/report-air-pollution-will-shorten-the-lives-of-children-in-south-asia-by-20-months\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>estimated that air pollution<\/strong><\/span><\/a> (ambient PM2.5 household and ozone air pollution collectively) caused 3.4 million deaths worldwide in 2017 and over 1.2 million only in India. PM2.5 alone resulted in more than 6.7 lakh deaths in India in 2017,&#8221; the NGO said.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 18pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>Strict Action Against the Rising Effects of Nitrogen Dioxide<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2516\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aqi.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Effects-of-Nitrogen-Dioxide-aqi-india-1.jpg\" alt=\"Effects of Nitrogen Dioxide in Indian Cities\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">The NGO has demanded a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aqi.in\/blog\/harmful-effects-of-air-pollution-might-be-the-main-cause-for-your-hospital-visits\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>strict law and order<\/strong><\/span><\/a> against the effects of nitrogen dioxide from the government. The rising NO2 level comes from manmade sources -, especially from transport, industries and power generation. It is important to track the hotspots and maintain the air quality in the country by tackling the health emergency caused by NO2 emissions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">&#8220;Emission standard deadlines for coal <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aqi.in\/blog\/aqi-india-know-what-you-breathe\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">power plants and industries<\/span><\/a><\/strong> must be strictly adhered to, even as the industrial and electricity sectors transition to cleaner alternatives for power generation.
