Believe me, there is always something new. Air pollution is on the news as it\u2019s coming into our lungs, but apparently it doesn\u2019t make the Indian government ashamed of what they are (not) doing regarding the issue. For those that actually read the news &#8211; which I believe is a small percentage of the bunch of people living in this country &#8211; it\u2019s all about finding a way to protect themselves. \u201cWhich brand of air masks is the best? Which air purifier should I buy for my house?\u201d From what I see, only a few people are looking for a solution or changing their daily habits that contribute to the issue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After one year of living in India, I finally realized that people in general are not worried because they don\u2019t know how big the problem is. Most of them never went abroad and never breathed clean air once in their lives. The other day I had to explain to a friend how bad the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thewire.in\/197455\/732-million-india-tops-list-number-people-without-access-toilets-report\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lack of sanitation <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in India; that having a lot of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trash<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the streets is not healthy at all and the big amount of animals like rats, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mumbaimirror.indiatimes.com\/mumbai\/other\/pigeons-a-nuisance-shut-dadar-kabutarkhana-mns\/articleshow\/59061594.cms\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pigeons<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and crows on the streets are signs of a filthy environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-304\" src=\"https:\/\/aqi.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/b37e333e-d7cd-11e7-a032-ea4e291afd66.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"647\" \/><span style=\"color: #999999;\"><em>New Delhi&#8217;s air pollution captured by\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Copernicus Sentinel-5P mission on November 10, 2017. Imagine for expats and tourists coming from other places that don&#8217;t face issues with pollution at all. Even if they do, most of them are not as serious as in <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/travel\/maps-and-graphics\/most-polluted-countries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Just check any map regarding air quality worldwide, or the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.esa.int\/spaceinimages\/Images\/2017\/12\/Pollution_over_Delhi_from_Sentinel-5P\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pictures released by the European Space Agency\u2019s (ESA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, captured by the Copernicus Sentinel-5P mission on November 10. They say that one picture speaks more than a thousand words, right? Wrong: most of the times, air pollution is not even visible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every year in Delhi it is the same old story: winter comes and people start to freak out. However, the levels of air pollution were bad in the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.epw.in\/journal\/2017\/46\/editorials\/foggy-minds.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">summer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and spring as well. They were just not visible. As we know, the temperature drops and increases the pollution, leading to the (in)famous Delhi Smog, but it doesn\u2019t mean that the air was decent the rest of the year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-305\" src=\"https:\/\/aqi.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/new-delhi-india-pollution-air-smog-DELHISMOG1117.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1000\" \/><span style=\"color: #999999;\"><em>Heavy smog at Jama Masjid in the old quarters of New Delhi on November 8, 2017.<\/em><\/span><span style=\"color: #999999;\"><em>\u00a0(SAJJAD HUSSAIN\/AFP\/Getty Images)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the World Health Organization (WHO), India has the world\u2019s highest mortality rate from respiratory disease. Air pollution in India is ten times the WHO\u2019s recommended maximum, twelve times the standards employed in the United States, and over twice the level considered acceptable by the Indian government. In 2015, there were 25 lakh premature deaths due to air pollution, and the numbers will keep increasing if we do not take action to curb the problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many studies that show the effects of air pollution. The most <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.financialexpress.com\/india-news\/air-pollution-malnutrition-major-causes-of-deaths-in-delhi-says-report\/934864\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent one<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, released by the medical British journal <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lancet, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">concluded that pollution is the largest environmental cause of disease and premature death in the world today. In India, air pollution is the second biggest health risk across the country, after child malnutrition &#8211; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/climate-change-air-pollution-may-increase-risk-of-malnutrition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which is related to air pollution as well<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Both issues were also the main causes of death in Delhi\u2019s National Capital Region last year, according to the report.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-302\" src=\"https:\/\/aqi.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Malnutrition-pollution-taking-the-biggest-toll-Delhi-New-study-The-Indian-Express-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1349\" height=\"620\" \/><span style=\"color: #999999;\"><em>Article by The Indian Express. Available at:\u00a0https:\/\/goo.gl\/A4owxU<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What surprises me is that despite all the work, reports and research that has been done regarding air pollution sources and its effects on children and human health, almost no action has been taken &#8211; just a thousand promises and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.livemint.com\/Politics\/pnlJFDeOHPFzWikYEIYqML\/NGT-slams-AAP-govt-for-not-filing-action-plan-to-curb-Delhi.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plans that never went on<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In the meanwhile, cosmetic brands keep launching and advertising their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/tarandipkaur\/2017\/11\/28\/is-anti-pollution-skincare-the-new-beauty-buzzword-in-asia\/#6409e8744a11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anti-pollution products<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like shampoos, face wash, face masks, etc. According to the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mintel.com\/press-centre\/beauty-and-personal-care\/over-a-third-of-all-anti-pollution-beauty-products-were-launched-in-asia-pacific-in-2016-mintel-reports\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mintel\u2019s report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, over a third of all anti-pollution beauty products were launched in Asia Pacific in 2016. It\u2019s bizarre, but makes sense. I dare you into an auto-rickshaw ride in the peak hours around Delhi: even before reaching at the destination, you\u2019re gonna realize a thick layer of \u2018sand\u2019 clogging your facial pores.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ironically, some of these products &#8211; and most devices used for air and water purification &#8211; are made out of activated charcoal, that usually is derived from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thewest.com.au\/opinion\/shane-wright\/indias-pollution-woes-show-coals-true-effect-ng-b88662854z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, one of the biggest sources of energy &#8211; and pollution &#8211; in India. Which means that we are washing out the pollution from our faces at the expense of the social, health and economic effects of coal exploitation. We wouldn\u2019t have to do it in the first place if the government commits itself to invest in sustainable and renewable energy sources. And that\u2019s what Greenpeace India has been trying to do over the past few years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-303\" src=\"https:\/\/aqi.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1510\" height=\"646\" \/><em><span style=\"color: #999999;\">Total Installed Capacity of Electricity Generation from Various Sources (Central Electricity Authority, New Delhi, June, 2012). Available at:\u00a0https:\/\/goo.gl\/oJ6JZg<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the organization, \u201cin 2015 the Environmental Ministry setted new standards for emissions that made it mandatory for coal power plants to reduce their toxic emissions. The deadline to comply is 7th Dec 2017 but many of these power plants are ignoring the standards and continue to poison the air we breathe\u201d. They setted up a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">petition<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to push the Environmental Minister, Dr. Harsh Vardhan, to take immediate steps to implement the standards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After reading a few headlines and coming to know that the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/in-india-climate-change-ranks-behind-coal-for-development\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ministry of Home Affairs cancelled Greenpeace\u2019s registration in India<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, making them fighting seven cases in court for its survival, it became clear for me that India\u2019s problem regarding the air quality relies much more in corruption and high-level lobbying than anything else. More than ever, people in India need to be aware about the air they breathe.
