{"id":21451,"date":"2025-11-04T17:46:59","date_gmt":"2025-11-04T12:16:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aqi.in\/blog\/?p=21451"},"modified":"2025-11-04T17:57:59","modified_gmt":"2025-11-04T12:27:59","slug":"air-pollution-deaths-in-delhi-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.aqi.in\/blog\/air-pollution-deaths-in-delhi-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"Delhi\u2019s Silent Killer: 15% of Deaths in 2023 Linked to Air Pollution"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breathing the air in the capital comes at a cost and lately it\u2019s been the cost of life.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the latest data from <\/span><b>Global Burden of Disease (GBD 2023)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> released by the <\/span><b>Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and further analyzed by <\/span><b>Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <strong data-start=\"778\" data-end=\"816\">air pollution deaths in Delhi 2023<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">accounted for nearly <\/span><b>15% of all deaths in 2023<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The data reveals that the<\/span><b> toxic air quality and air pollution<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was the <b>largest health risk<\/b> for residents and the<\/span><b> leading cause of deaths in Delhi in<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<strong>2023<\/strong>, claiming the lives of an <\/span><b>estimated 17,188<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> people(15%). The other causes that followed were high systolic blood pressure(12.5%), diabetes(9%), high cholesterol(6%) and high body-mass index(5.6%).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result, researchers at CREA conclude that the toll of pollution on people\u2019s lives has stayed alarmingly high. Unpaved roads and movement leads to road\u2011dust which hence adds to the particulate load.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">\n<h3><b>Industrial Emissions<\/b><\/h3>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Factories, power plants and other industrial units around the Delhi\/NCR region release sulphur dioxide (SO\u2082), volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and PM.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">\n<h3><b>Stubble Burning<\/b><\/h3>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After harvest, farmers in neighboring states of Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh burn leftover crop stalks. The numbers from the statistics are definitely alarming and need to be brought down.
