Mumbai floods after July 26, 2005, 29th August 2017 turned out to be a pretty flood(y) event in the city of Mumbai. These floods are one of the biggest monsoon disasters in the recent years. If the same amount of rain happened in May and June, it would not have been this bad a case. But Mumbai already has had about 2,000 mm of rainfall this monsoon season (since June) which is more than normal. Just because the soil has absorbed all the moisture from before, there is a greater impact right now.
It was stated according to the Meteorological officials, a low-pressure area had developed over southern Madhya Pradesh, which led to rains all over the country. The meteorological department has predicted more rain in large parts of Maharashtra and Gujarat over the next couple of days. For Mumbai, it could mean nearly 500 mm over three to four days.
There are certain factors that affect heavy floods like Mumbai floods:-
- Climate change and heavy rains: This means that due to a certain amount of climatic change, due to the geographic proximity or in this case due to a low-pressure area causing to heavy rains in a lot of parts around the area.
- Weak Building Regulations: The weaker building regulations that are caused in places like Mumbai cause an exceptional amount of possibility of floods. Mainly because the building and their holdings are outdated to stop floods from foregoing.
- Faltering Drainage: The main reason for the floods to take place is due to the weak drainage system in the cities. This most likely happens due to not having a planned aesthetic for the drainage system.
